Happy Canada Day all! I think that Matt Schmidt said it best (via Twitter):

On this day in 1867, Canadians bravely banded together and accepted the British Government’s bureaucratic restructuring of their provinces.

Well not really. While popular concepts of rebellion are a lot different in a country like Canada (where no revolution or war of independence provided a precedent) the notion of rebellion does exist in our country, but perhaps not to the extent that it does elsewhere in the world, where we can find different perspectives on the legitimacy of violence. I am certainly not placing Canada in a position of moral superiority—we are most certainly not deserving of that. However, I don’t think we deserve the reputation of being walked all over by the British and the Americans that is sometimes attributed to us.

Regardless, Happy Canada Day! Or flag-on-a-knapsack day! Today is important for us in another regard, too. One for which I am very excited! Today Kathryn and I mark two-years before our round-the-world departure. So for us, our adventure begins in 1 year, 11 months and 30 days! You can keep up to date with the timeframe in the handy dandy counter we’ve included in the sidebar.

We decided in August of 2008 that we wanted to embark on a long-term trip. Since then, we’ve been able to flesh out a timeframe and a budget to allow us the privilege of taking a year off from our careers to purse travel—a privilege that very people in this world can enjoy. I’m happy to say that in the ensuing 11 months, we are on track, having met all of our investment and budget goals.

One of our earliest goals was to have set up a website to document our travels and to serve as a warehouse of information that we can consult while we are on the road. Moreover, we envisioned that other travellers may find our research useful. For instance, we consolidated our research on global, mobile banking into an article which we hope will serve others, too — “What is the best bank account for a Canadian to have on a round-the-world trip?

As our research progresses, we’ll be adding occasional feature-length articles on other aspects of travel, ie the best credit card(s) to use, the best way to budget, suggestions for packing, research on our itinerary, etc. Also, we hope to invite guest bloggers to post interesting feature-length articles, as well.

Hence, we are launching Two Go Round-The World today! So, while Canada celebrates a venerable 142 years of existence, our little blog breaks forth into the soft light of July. Hence, we can check off another task completed, and return to sorting out the details for our trip. If you would like a little more information about Kathryn and me, check out our About Us page.

Hi Dan, Thanks for your comment on our blog and your subscription and linking. Compliments returned! We started thinking about our trip about 18 months ago, and found reading blogs and invaluable part of our thinking process. I still read travel blogs almost every day, partly for planning and partly to live vicariously. Your blog looks great and I look forward to keeping up with it as we both plan for our trips.
    Best wishes Victoria

Thanks for dropping by, Victoria—Kathryn and I appreciate it! If it weren’t for those sharing their trips and preparations for said trips, the time before our departure would just grind away! On the contrary now, sometimes I feel there won’t be enough time to do all of the writing, reading and planning. And we’re still 23 months out!
